A marble block is not just a piece of stone the moment it leaves the quarries of Marmara Island. That block is the silent promise of an architectural project. Our job is to tie every link carefully so that this promise does not get lost along the way. At Alpay Doğaltaş, we do not have our own quarry or factory. Our work is to match the right stone with the right project, and in doing so to bring three generations of accumulated family knowledge into every stage of the process.
The supply process does not begin with placing an order by phone, as many think. It begins by walking through quarries across Turkey, principally in Saraylar. Looking at the vein structure of a lot, reading the side surfaces of the blocks, observing how the light refracts on the surface of the stone are details that can never be understood from a photograph. The direction of the gray vein of classic Marmara, the crack-free area of Pure White, the contrast balance of Panda, the linear rhythm of Pijama Ekvator are all chosen on site. At this step, the family knowledge dating back to 1962 comes into play. Knowing which quarry yielded which quality block in which month is learned not from catalogs but from experience handed down across generations.
After the block is selected, we move on to the processing stage. At this stage, we work together with our partner workshops and processing facilities. Cutting is done according to the customer's spec, whether slabs or blocks will be shipped becomes clear, and dimensions are arranged according to the customer's measurement table. In products such as White Dolomite Aggregate, grain size separation, and in Dolomite and homogeneous marble slabs the surface treatment, is always decided at this stage. Our years-long relationships with our partners are the foundation of quality assurance for us. They know our spec and we know their capacity. This mutual familiarity is the backbone of producing flawless lots.
Packaging is the most misunderstood link of logistics. Securing a block incorrectly can lead it to crack at the corners during a journey of thousands of kilometers. Wooden crating, corner protection, nylon wrapping, soft separators between slabs are all part of the standard procedure. Weight distribution is important during container loading. Improperly distributed weight both upsets the balance of the container and causes blocks to move during the sea journey. For this reason, we prepare loading plans together with our partners.
At the port stage, the geography of Marmara Island is an advantage for us. The Saraylar port directly connects island production to the sea. Blocks are transferred from here to the large ports on the coast and from there set out toward Europe. Routes to Europe, particularly to Romania and Bulgaria, have over the years become regular lines for us. Every route has its own schedule, its own customs procedure, and its own seasonal dynamics. In winter months the rhythm of the Black Sea line is different, in spring lines passing through the Adriatic move at a different pace. Being a supplier means knowing these schedules by heart.
